It is very common for cats to not eat a full serving of their tinned food in one sitting. So how long can any unfinished portions be left out before they ‘go bad‘?
Room temperature
In general, the length of time which tinned cat food can be left out depends largely on the room temperature. In a home which has no air conditioning in the summer months, it would be good practice to leave any unfinished portions out for no longer than 20 minutes. Similarly, the 20 minute time limit would also apply to any home which has central heating on during the winter or which has a consistently warm kitchen. Even in a home where the room temperature is actually ‘room temperature’, the absolute maximum time which any unfinished cat food portions are left out really shouldn’t exceed 30 minutes.
Further helpings
Any cat nutrition which remains in the tin should be covered and refrigerated immediately after opening. When the next helping is due, this food should be warmed as most cats do not enjoy eating cold food. An easy way to do this is to put it in a microwavable dish, cover the dish with Clingfilm and then warm it up on a low setting for only a very short time, as the object is not to heat the food, but to warm it up to room temperature.
