Buying Guide to Rabbit Hutches

Rabbit hutches are small enclosures for rabbits. Though other small animals can also be kept in rabbit hutches, they are designed to keep rabbits only. Hutches provide a safe shelter for pet rabbits and are a must for every household that keeps rabbits as pets.

There are many benefits of rabbit hutches. Firstly, as mentioned above, hutches act as a home for pet rabbits, a space where they can retreat to and one where they can be kept safe and secure. When rabbits feel uneasy or threatened, they like to run to a place where they can feel comfortable and secure. Many hutches have a hiding place for this purpose. If rabbits are not provided such a space, they become emotionally troubled and may exhibit behavior inconsistencies. This may end up harming their physical health also. This makes hutches very important.

Hutches keep the rabbits warm as well. Rabbits do not respond positively to radical temperature changes. They like to be kept in a suitably warm environment which can be provided only by well-designed hutches. Hutches also keep rabbits out of predators’ reach as they keep the rabbit elevated from the ground.

While shopping for hutches for your pet rabbits, you must keep certain things in mind. To begin with, buy a hutch that has a nesting box where your pets can go and sleep in peace. Selecting the right size is also important to ensure optimal pet care. Ideally, there should be one square feet of space in the hutch for every pound that your rabbit weighs. For example, if your rabbit weighs between 6 and 7 pounds, you should buy a hutch that has an area of seven square feet. However, if you are looking for a hutch for a newly born rabbit, then make sure that you buy a size that allows for your pet’s growth.

Some hutches have wire flooring that allows the urine and excreta of the rabbit to fall down on the floor below. But it is unadvisable to buy hutches with such flooring. This is because wire flowing is unhealthy for rabbits’ feet. Cleaning the floor time and again also becomes quite a task. Therefore, you should buy hutches that have litter-boxes.

Rabbit hutches can be bought at most pet stores and even online. The usual price range is $50 to $150. While buying a hutch that you would be keeping outdoors, make sure that you select a model that won’t fall apart under unsuitable weather conditions.
